Health information management professionals take on advanced data management roles throughout hospitals, nursing homes, medical group practices, clinics, home health agencies, ambulatory care practices, public health organizations, and more. Wherever they work, they’re often in charge of:

    • Analyzing and protecting digital and traditional medical information
    • Overseeing information governance and the integrity and privacy of data across the organization
    • Designing and implementing processes to ensure that medical information is document accurately and completely
    • Working with patient-forward healthcare teams to improve the quality of information recorded

While some health information managers may work independently, many others will manage teams of healthcare professionals, like medical coders, transcriptionists, administrative staff, and so on. In cases like that, health information management professionals are in charge of not just the data, but the other people handling the data and make sure they do so with a critical eye.

Health information technicians, sometimes called medical records technicians, are tasked with the organization and management of this sensitive data, with duties that include:

    • Using classification software and coding patient records according to standard classifications
    • Maintaining and storing data in clinical registries and databases
    • Utilizing knowledge of medical terminology, health statistics, and medical laws and ethical standards
    • Tracking patient outcomes for quality assessment
    • Managing revenue by determining diagnoses and procedure codes in order to support billing

Because of the nature of the data and information being managed, maintaining the confidentiality of patient's records with the utmost integrity is a key factor in the profession. And with everything located online, health information technicians these days must be knowledgeable about the digital databases they utilize and how to keep them secure from any unwanted access.
