Northwestern College Participates in Pen Pal Program with Oak Lawn School 4th Graders

Numerous staff and faculty members of Northwestern College once again participated in the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 2014 Pen Pal Program with Oak Lawn School’s fourth grade classes. Multiple businesses and Chamber members of the Oak Lawn community participated, providing pen pals for approximately eighty five (85) fourth graders during the fall quarter of the school year.

A number of letters were exchanged between the children and Northwestern College staff and faculty, as well as with Chamber Members and employees from businesses such as Walmart, Archer Bank, and Oak Lawn Bank. The program culminated in a pizza party on December 4th at the school where the children finally got to meet their pen pals and share pizza, punch, popcorn and ice cream. The food for the party was donated by Northwestern College, Walmart, Archer Bank and Culvers.

The Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce and Industry has hosted this event for a number of years, with Northwestern College being a steady participant in the program. This year Northwestern College invited staff from its Rosemont administrative offices to participate, with six (6) Rosemont staff members traveling twenty seven (27) miles to finally meet their pen pals at Oak Lawn School.

All of the Northwestern College staff had a wonderful time meeting their 4th grade pen pals, as did the students, with many enjoying the chance to talk further about things they had shared or read in their letters. Overall, Chamber members were impressed this year with the quality of writing in the fourth grade class, in addition to all of the artwork the children included in the letters and envelopes in order to personalize them for their pen pals. The Chamber’s Pen Pal Program is always an extremely positive experience that is enjoyed each time it is held!
