Ingredients for Success: Attitude and Motivation
Self-image can affect your attitude and motivation. These two things are both very important to your success as a student. If you feel good about yourself and have confidence, it will be easier to develop a positive attitude and the motivation to learn.
Your attitude often determines your performance in school. It’s reflected in how much interest you take in your studies or how meaningful your work is to you. If you have a positive attitude about school, you will be able to:
- Figure our your responsibilities in the learning process
- Set goals for yourself
- Study for your classes in a more effective way
- Improve your grades and performance as a student
Motivation is equally important. It’s what makes you want to accomplish a task. As a student, the right motivation can help you:
- Get started on projects and assignments
- Move closer to your goals
- Keep working on tasks until you succeed
To become a successful student, seek out support from people and resources, such as:
- Friends and family
- Coworkers
- Other students
- Campus discussion groups
- Instructors and tutors
- Academic advisors
- Campus resources (libraries, computer labs, advising center)
Most importantly take responsibility for your education. Don’t simply rely on others to teach you. If a class becomes difficult, ask for help!
Be an active learner. Ask questions about things that interest you.
Decide what you want to learn from each course.
The way you decide to manage stress will determine how it affects your performance as a student. Choose a method that works best for you when stressed. When managed correctly, a small amount of stress can actually help you stay focused and complete tasks. Don’t let stress control you!
