Our Programs

Northwestern College offers programs for students at different points in their careers. Whether you want to switch jobs, advance in your current role, or are just beginning your professional life, you will find several programs to help you achieve your goals, including:

Individuals looking to enter the healthcare sector and those already working in the medical field who wish to expand their skills should consider our certificate programs. These job-focused programs contain no general education requirements, allowing students to complete them in as little as one year. We offer certificates in the following fields of study on our Oak Lawn campus:

  • Dental Assisting: This 48-hour certificate program features online and in-person classes taught by experienced instructors. Students who complete the program are eligible to take the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) certification exam.
  • Medical Assisting: This program trains students to be effective medical assistants through traditional classroom education and practical externships. Students are eligible to take the American Medical Technologists Registered Medical Assistant exam upon graduation.

An ideal way to further your career in a medical occupation is through an associate degree program. Northwestern College offers two associate programs on campus, including:

  • Radiologic Technology: Students learn to become entry-level radiographers in this program, capable of successfully fulfilling duties in clinical settings. Most students complete the required 108 credit hours in just two years.
  • Health Information Technology: Hospitals and medical facilities in the greater Chicago area helped design the curriculum, which contains knowledge on recent trends in health information systems and an externship for gaining practical experience.
  • Nursing: The Violet L. Schumacher School of Nursing provides students with the skills they need to begin a career in nursing. It offers both online lecture classes and hands-on learning through simulation labs and clinical applications.

Students who require more flexibility with their studies may consider our online programs. These courses give you more freedom when establishing your schedule while retaining the level of quality found in the in-person programs. They foster a virtual community, enabling students to network with peers and receive regular, one-on-one feedback from instructors.

You may enroll in the Health Information Technology associate degree online or the bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management program. Students learn to solve the many challenges medical offices face with information management and develop soft skills vital for many roles, such as critical thinking and effective communication.

Upon completion of the required coursework, students can sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam offered by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). They may also earn their medical coding certificate by enrolling in this program. Individuals considering the bachelor’s degree program must first complete the Health Information Technology associate degree or a similarly accredited program.

Another online program you may consider is Business Administration. Students who enroll in either the associate or bachelor’s degree program will develop core business skills, such as accounting, marketing, and leadership and management. This program gives students a starting set of competencies to explore the various subfields within business administration.

Please note: Online programs are available only in select states. Prospective students can review our map to determine which programs they may enroll in.
