What Medical Assistants Do

Medical assistants are detail-oriented professionals who help ensure the success of a medical office or healthcare facility with their strong interpersonal skills, thorough training and attention to detail. They carry out a wide range of responsibilities, from direct patient care to the behind-the-scenes work that helps a facility run efficiently. Common tasks include:

  • Taking vital sign measurements
  • Administering injections and medications (as permitted by law)
  • Preparing specimens for laboratory tests
  • Recording patient histories
  • Inputting insurance codes
  • Helping physicians with examinations
  • Taking blood samples
  • Scheduling appointments and follow-up visits
  • Maintaining healthcare records

Depending on the hospital or facility, a medical assistant may put their skills to work in a variety of areas. They also can choose to specialize in a particular type of medicine, such as ophthalmology, elder care, or obstetrics. Our online medical assisting classes provides a solid foundation for future professional growth, as there is some crossover between medical assisting and fields such as nursing or radiography.

Graduates of our online medical assisting certification classes are eligible to sit for the American Medical Technologists Registered Medical Assistant exam.
